Are We Robbing Our Own Joy? How to Find Joy in Christ

Finding Contentment and Peace in Christ

How much of the joy we lack is actually because of our own doing?

It’s a humbling question — but an important one.

What if we could experience more joy, more peace, and more steady happiness simply by the daily decisions we make with our thoughts, our focus, and our trust in God?

Many of us are quietly searching for how to find joy in Christ in the middle of real, everyday life, not just in the easy seasons, but in messy, uncertain ones too.

If we’re honest, two of the biggest joy-stealers in our lives are:

• A lack of contentment

• An over-obsession with worry about things we cannot control

And sometimes… without even realizing it… we are the ones quietly robbing our own peace.

When Worry and Discontent Take Over

Scripture gives us such grounded wisdom in Ecclesiastes:

“Accept the way God does things, for who can straighten what he has made crooked? Enjoy prosperity while you can, but when hard times strike, realize that both come from God. Remember that nothing is certain in this life.” — Ecclesiastes 7:13–14 (NLT)

Part of trusting God to be who He says He is — all-powerful, all-knowing, sovereign, and fully in control — means learning to live with contentment in the present moment.

Part of trusting God to be who He says He is,
all-powerful, all-knowing, sovereign, and fully in control — means learning to live with contentment in the present moment.

Not in the what-ifs.

Not in the hypotheticals.

Not in the situations we were never meant to carry.

Because the truth is simple:

Why worry about what you have no control over?

Yes, we can have opinions.

Yes, we can feel frustrated when life doesn’t go our way.

But what is unchecked worry actually producing?

More peace?

More joy?

More trust in God?

Usually… none of the above.

The Dangerous Doorway of Stewing

When we continually stew in frustration and anxiety, something subtle but serious happens — we give the enemy a foothold in our thoughts.

Ephesians 4:27 warns us not to “give the devil a foothold.”

Chronic worry often leads to:

• irritability

• anger

• fear spirals

• mental exhaustion

• loss of joy

And suddenly the very peace God offers us feels far away — not because He moved, but because our focus did.

Sometimes we tell ourselves:

“Well, someone has to say something.”

And sometimes that may be true.

But wisdom also asks:

Is this mine to carry?

Is this producing peace?

Is this drawing me closer to Christ — or further into frustration?

Because many times, the constant agitation over things outside of our control only drains our own joy while changing very little else. Learning how to find joy in Christ often begins with releasing the burdens we were never meant to hold.

Choosing Praise in Every Season

Here is the deeper heart check:

In seasons of uncertainty…

In seasons of frustration…

In seasons where answers feel slow…

God is still worthy of our praise.

In seasons of uncertainty…
In seasons of frustration…
In seasons where answers feel slow God is still worthy of our praises.

The question becomes:

Are we praising now in light of the future hope to come?

Or are we unintentionally robbing our own joy through constant complaining and worry?

Even Jesus modeled surrender in the garden when He prayed:

“Not my will, but Yours be done.”

That posture — though difficult — is where peace begins to grow.

Remembering God’s Faithfulness

Isaiah reminds us beautifully:

“O Lord, I will honor and praise your name, for you are my God. You do such wonderful things! You planned them long ago, and now you have accomplished them.”

— Isaiah 25:1 (NLT)

Isaiah 25:1

Friend, God has been faithful before.

And He will be faithful again.

The same God who carried you through past seasons is still holding your future securely in His hands.

That truth alone is reason to breathe deeper…

to loosen our grip on worry…

and to step back into joy.

Because the journey of how to find joy in Christ is often less about changing our circumstances and more about realigning our trust.

A Gentle Heart Check

Today, ask yourself honestly:

• Where am I lacking contentment?

• What am I worrying about that I cannot control?

• Am I feeding my peace — or feeding my frustration?

Because sometimes the doorway back to joy isn’t found in changing our circumstances…

It’s found in realigning our trust.

And friend — that is something worth celebrating.

Prayer:

Lord, I thank you that you truly do make contentment easy to obtain when we turn our gaze to your eyes. Lord. You are provider, healer, creator, God-almighty, God-all-knowing. And believing in that helps me trust you. But sometimes I get caught up in my flesh and forget all that. Please forgive me for my waves of doubt. Increase my dependency on you, and may I find contentment and true joy in You alone.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
