Training for Faithfulness Instead of Perfection: A Faith-Based Approach to Whole Wellness

Training for faithfulness instead of Chasing Perfection

In a world overflowing with fitness challenges, fad diets, and the newest “must-have” supplement—most promising quick results but rarely lasting change—what if we challenged ourselves differently?

What if we stopped obsessing over temporary physical results and started focusing on what actually lasts for eternity?

What Faith-Based Wellness Really Means

This is where faith-based wellness begins—not with the pursuit of perfection, but with the pursuit of God. A Christian approach to wellness rooted in grace and stewardship.

A way of caring for our bodies, minds, and hearts that prioritizes spiritual growth, balance, and grace over quick fixes and cultural pressure.

My Experience Inside the Fitness Industry

After spending years in the fitness industry, I’ve seen firsthand how damaging that world can be—not just to our bodies, but to our minds and hearts. The pressure. The comparison. The constant striving for “more” and “better.”

I didn’t recognize the damage right away. But looking back now, I see it clearly.

Been there.

Done that.

Not going back.

If you knew me during my fitness-obsessed years, I can honestly say this: I am not the same person anymore—and that’s only by the grace of God.

And here’s the beautiful part: God redeems what was damaged. He takes what once consumed us and transforms it into something that brings Him honor and glory.

The Danger of the Quick-Fix Wellness Mindset

The problem was never health. The problem was the obsession with the quick fix. A mindset that distorts a Christian wellness perspective and replaces balance with pressure.

Eat less.

Lift more.

Get skinny.

Look like her.

Eat this.

Don’t eat that.

Drink this.

Take this supplement.

Swallow this “magic pill.”

Do this.

Don’t do that.

Jump on the next fad—even when deep down you know it won’t last—because everyone else is doing it.

And so the cycle continues.

What Are We Really Chasing?

But really… when does it end? And for what?

A “perfect” body?

A body shaped by society’s standards—flat stomach, toned thighs, just-right curves?

Here’s a thought that stopped me in my tracks one day:

What if we get to Heaven and discover that God’s idea of a “perfect” body was the one we had all along?

I don’t fully understand what Scripture means when it says we’ll receive new bodies one day (see 1 Corinthians 15:50–58). But I do know this—I’m done chasing a version of perfection that will never exist on this side of Heaven.

Because none of that fixes what truly matters.

It doesn’t strengthen our faith.

It doesn’t grow our spiritual muscles.

It doesn’t heal the condition of our hearts.

What Will Matter When We Stand Before Jesus

When we stand face-to-face with Jesus after our final breath, He won’t ask us to lift our shirts and inspect our stomachs. He won’t have us flex our arms to show off biceps.

He will examine our hearts.

And the real “flex” will come down to one of two responses:

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:23)

—or—

“I never knew you. Depart from me.” (Matthew 7:21–23)

That second one still makes me cringe.

So instead of chasing perfection,

I’m choosing health and progress as I learn balance in the stewardship of the body God gave me.

I’m choosing health and progress as I learn balance in stewarding the body God gave me.

I want to be a better version of myself than I was yesterday—by God’s standards, not my own.

I want to look a little more like Jesus each day.

A Biblical View of Health and Body Stewardship

Now let me be clear—this is not anti-fitness.

God absolutely calls us to care for our bodies. They are made in His image. They are temples of the Holy Spirit. He never intended for us to neglect them—or to fill our bodies and minds with junk.

We are daughters of the Most High King.

We are not called to laziness or complacency.

We are called to discipline, stewardship, and growth.

What Scripture Says About Wellness

The Bible offers a clear Biblical view of health, reminding us that spiritual health and physical stewardship are deeply connected.

Scripture reminds us:

  • We are created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27).

  • Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19).

  • We are sons and daughters of the King (2 Corinthians 6:18).

  • Physical training has value—but training for godliness has eternal impact (1 Timothy 4:8).

  • We are chosen, royal, and set apart (1 Peter 2:9).

That changes how we view discipline. That changes how we view fitness. That changes the goal entirely.

Reordering Our Priorities for Whole Wellness

God graciously reminded me that the things that matter most must be prioritized correctly:

  1. Word

  2. Worship

  3. Witness

  4. Workout/Nutrition

Shortly after the Bagels & Bibles event, I began reflecting on something that had been sitting quietly in my spirit for a while. As I looked at the fitness and wellness industry through fresh eyes, it became clear that something essential was missing: grace, balance, and properly aligned priorities.

So often, we focus intensely on one area of wellness while neglecting the others—and the result is an unbalanced life that falls short of the fullness God intends for us.

Why Whole-Listic Wellness Requires Balance

Have you ever tried putting a puzzle together with a missing piece?

No matter how hard you try, it doesn’t work. You never get to see the finished picture.

Wellness works the same way.

This isn’t just about fitness. It’s about whole-listic wellness—the way God designed it.

A faith and fitness balance that honors God with every part of our lives.

Every piece matters, and none were meant to stand alone.

We need the Word of God daily for spiritual health.

We need daily worship to keep our hearts aligned.

We need to witness—to share the hope of the same Jesus who rescued us.

And we need to move our bodies and nourish them well so we can feel well and serve well.

Introducing 4Wellness: A Faith-Based Wellness Framework

That realization became the foundation of 4Wellness—a faith-based framework built around learning balance, training for faithfulness instead of striving for perfection, and placing our spiritual life at the center of true wellness.

What Is the 4Wellness 40-Day Challenge?

And from that foundation, the idea for the 4Wellness 40-Day Challenge was born.

Forty days to practice balance.

Forty days to extend grace when we don’t get it right.

Forty days to intentionally prioritize God—and watch what He can do.

It may look like a lot at first glance, but these aren’t about perfection. They’re about pursuit.

Not chasing perfection—but chasing the Lord, who is perfect.

These practices are intentional.

Training for Faithfulness, Not Perfection

This isn’t about punishment. It’s about alignment.

It’s about training—not just your body, but your heart, mind, and spirit—for what truly lasts.

Some of these practices will feel easy. Others may stretch you far beyond your comfort zone.

That’s okay.

You can't change without a little challenge, and change won't ever happen inside your comfort zone.

Change doesn’t happen in comfort. Growth requires stretching—and stretching can feel uncomfortable.

And if you miss a day or don’t check every box perfectly, here’s the good news: God gives grace in imperfection. So give yourself some too.

God does not call us to perfection.

He calls us to progress. This is the heart of training for godliness, not performance.

He calls us to grow daily in our relationship with Him.

After all, He is our daily bread.

Why Daily Faithfulness Matters More Than Perfection

This isn’t a one-and-done decision. It’s a daily-life-long commitment, much like marriage or any meaningful relationship. It takes intention, effort, and consistency over time.

Just as physical health isn’t built with one workout or one “good” day of eating, spiritual health isn’t built in a single moment. It’s cultivated day by day.

Relationships work the same way.

And that relationship—with Jesus—is the entire point.

This journey will take dedication and perseverance—but you’re not doing it alone. God is faithful to walk with you through growth, health, and sanctification.

And remember this:

The only relationship we take into eternity is the one we build with Jesus here on earth.
